Movie Review – Robots : So-So

I’ll admit that from the previews I was interested in seeing this film. But having the knowledge that the creators of Ice Age (which I loved) were also behind Robots may have hurt my final judgement. Here’s the thing: It just wasn’t as funny as it was trying to be. There were so many points in the movie where I know I’m hearing/seeing a joke, yet I’m not laughing. In fact, I don’t remember laughing at anything in about the last third.

Robots still.

Now, it’s quite possible that the movie was geared towards a younger audience, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t appeal to adults too. For example, Ice Age, Toy Story, Shrek… these are all movies that I think catered to both kids and adults. I love all 3 of them; they’re great. Great stories, characters, and of course, humor.

Robots wasn’t an awful film, it simply could have been so much better. Certainly the animation was wonderful. But the other thing that really bugged me was the sound. You almost never notice the sound in movies, unless there’s something wrong with it. In this movie, I felt there wasn’t enough of it. So many scenes felt quiet and they just screamed for more sound effects and fun music. But no. Not here. Oh well.

Again, I didn’t hate this movie, but I don’t think I could recommend it to my friends. To little kids however, I think they’d get a kick out of it.
My grade: C-
